In the midst of blogging last fall’s portrait sessions, I came across the “mchale” folder. Yup, my two boys in all of their figity, refuse-to-listen, can-we-get-our-surprise-now glory! They are awesome kids, don’t get me wrong. But very difficult portrait clients! I think some of that is mommy being much much too picky. When my husband and I talk about this sunny fall day we tend to remember the multiple rounds of “stop kicking your brother”, “stop strangling your brother”, “stop poking your brother with that stick”, and my favorite — “pleaasssseee hold hands, just for 1/125 of a second??”. Looking back on it 6 months later is so much different. I can see how each one of them has changed, the features in their faces subtly older and more mature in ways that only those who know them best know. Their funny faces and imperfect poses are now perfect, no longer seen by the eyes of a too picky photographer who feels the pressure of christmas cards looming, but now seen through the eyes of their mom. I don’t care anymore that the older one’s sweater was too big and little guy had hair sticking up. I am so thankful for each moment with my crazy boys. I am going to have to hold onto this feeling as I attempt to add in their little sister to the photo session this afternoon. My most difficult clients, for sure, but my favorite, too!
By the way, this first image of the “strangling” that bugged me so much in October? It’s one of my favorites.
