Your session experience starts with a conversation about your family dynamics. It’s so important that there are elements in your images that are familiar to and cherished by you, whether it be in the season we choose, the location, activity or some thing as simple as the clothes you select.
I have 15 years as a professional portrait photographer and use that experience throughout the session to know when to devote time to each one of the aspects of the session that are important to you, when to move on to a new location, switch gears and try something different, follow the lead of the kids, and when to take control and re-focus. Most importantly I know how to create a gallery of images you will swoon over.
All I want you to think about once the session begins is being present and in the moment. Because that is the single most important thing in creating authentic, timeless family images.
Below are the session types – just something to introduce you to the way I begin to think about capturing your family in photographs. To really start the conversation, fill out the contact form and let’s chat!
Interactions and relationships between moms, dads, and siblings are the focus of these sessions. For about an hour and a half you get to focus solely on your kids — running, playing, and snuggling them. Sounds fun, right? It really is! These sessions are photographer-directed, some points more loosely than others. There is opportunity (always!) for a more formal, posed photograph of the family and portraits of each child and siblings, but most of the session is guided by your family’s energy and what activity is going to bring out the best in everyone.
Unscripted sessions capture your family in their own environment completely without any photographer direction. There are no posed images at all during this session, and very few camera-aware (subject looking at the lens) images. I walk into your home and act as a photojournalist, observing the moments as they naturally come without any interaction from me. The sessions includes a custom fine-art printed book telling your story.
Planned in advance, newborn sessions happen within the first twenty days of life. Big siblings and parents are always part of the story and included in the session. Your home is the backdrop for much of the session, adding depth and truth to the images. I also bring a studio setup for some more posed, traditional images of baby. Props are kept to an absolute minimum as we want the focus of those images to be on the baby and their tiny features.
Generation sessions are a favorite with grandparents! We take the whole group, from grandparents, their children, spouses, and grandchildren, and create heirloom portraits at a location meaningful to the family. The most cherished image is, undoubtedly, the grandparents surrounded by the newest generation! In addition to that you will end up with a diverse collection of each immediate family, couple, and cousins groups.
